Introducing Hologram Barbie
These days, technology has really stepped up how we interact with the devices in our lives. We have home speakers like Echo that are capable of looking up the weather and relaying that information to us as if it were a rather dull human being. However, what devices like the Echo have yet to be able to do is humanize that experience. They do not give us the experience of speaking with something that can make small talk. This is especially important for children who cannot necessarily understand that difference between speaking with a human and speaking with a robot. At the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mattel unveiled the answer to this dilemma with Hologram Barbie. The hologram’s full features have yet to be released, but there are a few things we have learned so far.
Hologram Barbie is basically the iconic doll turned into a holographic figure that children can talk to. She is capable of telling a few corny jokes, dancing, and even small talk. It is capable of relaying information about the weather in a way only Barbie can, which is guaranteed to be infinitely more interesting for a little girl compared with what the weather man has to offer.
Not a Smart Speaker
While it may share a few functions as a smart speaker, Hologram Barbie is far from that. In fact, Mattel released a pretty cool smart speaker named Aristotle during the event, which basically serves as a caretaker for your kid. But Hologram Barbie is completely different.
Hologram Barbie cannot actually control anything. To the relief of most parents, it cannot buy things from a shopping website. Instead, Hologram Barbie is capable with conversing with your child. It can talk about the weather and even take notes on a calendar. Another interesting feature is that it can change Barbie’s looks. Everything from Barbie’s clothes to her skin and hair colors are customizable to give each child a personalized play experience. At least three types of Hologram Barbies have already been revealed with more probably coming soon. All will be added to the final product to make it extra exciting when they eventually launch it.
There is an app for using Hologram Barbie, but it’s not required. All it does is give parents a bit more control over how their child uses the hologram. For instance, they can set a bedtime to make sure their child does not stay up all night talking to it.
While the holographic Barbie is made using 3D computer animation, the projection that your child gets to interact with is only 2D. This means that, while she looks 3D, looking at the box from the side is not going to show you a different angle of the projection. And while Hologram Barbie’s conversation skills are pretty advanced, it is pretty much the same as what we witnessed with Dreamhouse and Hello Barbie from the last few years of releases.
At the end of the day, Hologram Barbie is great for little girls, especially for those who are fans of Barbie.
